Main Aviary

Do you know about a sanctuary, where 200 birds from 40 different species fly above the lush greenery? Yes, I’m talking about the Main Aviary of Bird Kingdom Ontario, which is transformed into a multi-level rainforest and is known as the largest free-flying aviary in the world. The term free-flying means, that birds are trapped in cages, rather, their interactions with both their surroundings and guests are more organic.

Up to 35 feet high towering palm trees form a cover that allows colorful birds to fly about freely. The centerpiece is a magnificent 40-foot waterfall that empties into a tranquil pond below, adding to the area’s organic feel. The design evokes the feeling of being in an exotic place with its vivid vegetation, meandering walkways, and serene water features, all of which are characteristics of a tropical ecosystem of Main Aviary, Bird Kingdom.

Bird encounters are the perfect way to interact and learn about the specific species and their habitats. These interactions also include feeding sessions to certain lorikeets. This feeding session is classified as Lorikeet Feeding. This practical experience promotes understanding of conservation issues and deepens appreciation for bird life.

What are Lorikeets?

Lorikeets are small and colorful birds that belong to the family of Loriidae. Such parrots are found in Australia and the surrounding region. Another known feature of lorikeets is their brush-tipped tounges, which have evolved specifically to consume soft fruits, pollen, and nectar.

One of the common lorikeets is Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) having a beautiful color combination of blue, green, yellow, and red. Frequently flying in groups, lorikeets are gregarious birds that are essential to the pollination of many flowering plants. They also eat microscopic insects as part of their diet.

For this interactive feeding session, tourists can purchase their primary food like nectar to get close and to feed them. The activities are designed around feeding sessions, which take place several times a day. The Lorikeet Feeidng not only enhances the tourists’ experience but also allows them to observe the natural behavior of birds.

There are limited slots and timings for this experience. So, it’s advised to book tickets in advance.
