On November 22, 2023, a car exploded at the Rainbow Bridge due to the devastating car accident. The incident is due to a car crashing of Bentley Flying Spur 2022 into the security booths at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection area. The 2 passengers from Grand Island, New York name Kurt, and Monica Villani both 53 years old were killed in the explosion. The car crash and its explosion prompted authorities to close all the nearby crossings including The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, and Whirlpool Bridge until the case investigation was done. Because the crash raised concerns about the safety and security at the border crossing. Further security measures were taken at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, where security persons checked the vehicles and passengers.
Niagara Falls Car Crash at Rainbow Bridge
The car accident happened before the national holiday when it was traveling at high speed towards the Rainbow Bridge. The accident happened at a time of heavy traffic around 10:30 AM. The people witnessing the accident described the car as having laden into a median, flipped over the air, and finally destroyed the customs booths after bursting into flames. Security heads and law enforcement provided an immediate response, that it might be a terrorist attack. Within a few hours, it was confirmed by officials that it was a tragic accident, as no signs of terrorism were found. After the confirmation, police focused on potential mechanical failures or medical issues that may cause the car crash.
Impact on Tourism and Traffic
The Rainbow Bridge was closed for almost 24 hours after the accident. As the accident happened before the Thanksgiving Holiday, this shutdown affected many travelers and their itinerary especially since it was during a festive period around Thanksgiving day which is considered as one of the busiest travel periods. The travelers were forced to find alternative routes and had to travel longer than often.
Aftermath and Investigation
When it was announced that it was not a terrorist attack, the FBI and local authorities started their further investigation to get some other clues. Agencies recovered a black box from the vehicle. But the Niagara Falls Mayor said: “The recovered Black Box from the car was also destroyed in the crash”. Security footage of the surrounding area was also viewed for further investigation.
Officials talked with Bentley Motors for the personal history of the victim, their records, and general information about the black box. But they refused to give it without a Subpoena. Officers are in the process of getting those subpoenas from the district attorney’s office.
What is a Subpoena?
A subpoena is a legal document from the court, that orders the person to appear in the court. It is a formal document where one individual instructs the other to provide evidence or get to testify in court.
According to the Mayor of Niagara Falls, the investigation is closed, because of many unanswered questions. He said, that we have to find any clear evidence that provides information of any problem that led to a car crash.
